The Seafarer’s Level of Understanding on Ballast Water Management Convention

Abstract Due to practical and economic considerations, the sea transportation is increasingly in demand as a means of transporting world trade activities. The ships without cargo will use ballast water stabilizer. Ballast often carried by various foreign microorganisms that harm ecosystem. IMO promulgated 8 September 2017 Water Management (BWM) Convention prevent spread harmful pathogenic microbes. This study aims determine understanding seafarers provisions BWM. descriptive-analytical method used cross-sectional approach using questionnaires in-depth interviews. sample consisted 47 seafarers; 3 samples were removed because they did not meet requirements. results show most respondents do understand BWM correctly. None knew when was enacted. In some questions, less than 10% answers are correct. However, on importance handling water, there 43.18% answered correctly, meaning concern for about dangers it, it essential address immediately. We suggest socialization among can be through seminars or special training water.
